Hello. My name is Ignacio. I am a lecturer in Astronomy at the Department of Physics and System & Communication Engineering of the University of Alicante.

Research

My research is connected with different aspects of massive star formation and evolution, with special focus on the properties of massive binary systems - in particular, massive X-ray binaries - and very young open clusters. Apart from the people in the Stellar Evolution Team here at Alicante, I work together with a large number of professional astronomers from all over the world, collaborating in many different research projects.

In Spain, we work together with Artemio Herrero and his team (IAC) and Paco Najarro (now at the CAB) in our current research project. We also collaborate with Jesús Maíz-Apellániz (IAA), Marc Ribó (University of Barcelona) and Jorge Casares (IAC). In the UK, I do a lot of work with Simon Clark, at the Open University. I also collaborate with Andy Norton, also at the Open, and my former supervisor Malcolm Coe and his team at Southampton. Lately, I've done a lot of work with David M. Smith, at the University of California Santa Cruz. We also keep a long-running collaboration with Pablo Reig, at FORTH Crete. I I have also worked with are Christian Motch (Observatoire de Strasbourg), Sylvain Chaty, GianLuca Israel, Atsuo Okazaki, Raimundo Lopes de Oliveira, and many others.

I use the WWW mostly as a work accessory and therefore my pages are likely to be rather technical. The pictures above offer links to several press releases describing some aspects of my research. Many years ago, I also wrote the X-ray binary page, which gives an overview for the general public of this field. History

Between 2002 and 2007, I was a researcher within the "Ramón y Cajal" programme of the Ministry of Science and Technology (later Ministry of Education and Science; even later something else).

Previously, I had worked as a researcher at the Observatoire Astronomique de Strasbourg (Sept. 2000 to Febr. 2002). Before, I was an ESA external research fellow at the Science Data Center of the SAX satellite, in Rome (Oct. 1998 to Aug. 2000). Even earlier, I worked as a postdoctoral assistant for Prof. Mike Bode at the Astrophysics Research Institute of the Liverpool John Moores University (Jan. 1997 to Sept. 1998). I did my PhD thesis at the Astronomy Group of Southampton University.
